Participatory performance. 20 Stethoscopes. 2010.
Twenty people standing in a circle are daisy chained by stethoscopes. Listening from the earbuds of the apparatuses, the bells of the chest piece attach to the jugular of their neighbor. Over time it becomes ever more difficult to distinguish the sounds of their own body from that of the person they are standing next to. As the group settles in to the experience these sound begin to lose authorship entirely as the listener imagines these sounds of breathing, gulps, and pulses as belonging to themselves, the people beside them, or the people standing across from them. An experience that falsely elicits a sense of unity as each participant still maintains a response that is uniquely their own.Return to Portfolio
